MOUNTAIN LIONS FEAST ON "DONUT" GAME

CONCORD ROUTS WV STATE TO IMPROVE TO 4-1

In sports parlance, Saturday's Concord Football contest at West Virginia State could be described as a “sandwich” game, or a “donut” game – that is, a game falling between contests of greater importance.

The Mountain Lions went into their meeting with the winless Yellow Jackets in Institute off an important win over Charleston last week, and with a potentially important visit to unbeaten Shepherd looming the next week.

But whether it was a “sandwich” or a “donut,” it was tasty.

Concord rolled to a 35-3 halftime lead and cruised to a 42-18 victory, raising their record to 4-1, 2-1 WVIAC.

Brian Kennedy TD Run at WVSU 314 x 276
The Mountain Lions took the opening kickoff and embarked on a lightning-quick six-play, 67-yard, 1:26 scoring drive capped off by Brian Kennedy's eight-yard touchdown run.

Concord LB Jimmy Keating intercepted a Robert Jackson pass on State's first possession, setting up the Mountain Lions for an eight-play, 74-yard, 2:18 drive that ended with an 11-yard Kennedy TD run.

Zach Gibbins sacked Jackson for a 17-yard loss on 3rd down on WVSU's next possession, forcing the Yellow Jackets to punt.

The Mountain Lions again struck quickly, going on a five-play, 64-yard, 1:01 drive that culminated with an 11-yard TD pass from Zack Grossi to Thomas Mayo and a 21-0 lead.

Ethan Perry sacked Jackson for a 17-yard loss on 3rd down on the following possession, and WVSU had to punt again.

Concord took longer to score on its fourth possession. It required ten plays and 4:06 for the Mountain Lions to drive for another score, a seven-yard Kennedy TD run.

Just 15:03 into the game, Concord led 28-0.

Tae Gilbert Run at WVSU 186 x 314
West Virginia State would get on the board on Craig Wissler's 36-yard field goal with 3:40 left in the 2nd quarter. But Concord replied with a one-yard TD run by Tae Gilbert just four seconds before halftime.

CU outgained State 361-34 in the first half and held a 22-6 advantage in first downs.

The Mountain Lions played their backups extensively in the second half. QB Evin Dusold ran for a one-yard touchdown with 9:07 left in the game.

WVSU got a 44-yard Wissler field goal midway through the 3rd quarter, and a pair of TD passes from QB Ricky Phillips in the 4th quarter, but by then the outcome had been decided.
