IN THE WIN COLUMN

CU NABS FIRST VICTORY WITH DEFEAT OF BLUEFIELD COLLEGE

Concord's Men's Soccer team had been on the doorstep of victory several times in 2010. The Mountain Lions had played three draws and had suffered four 1-0 defeats, but hadn't yet claimed that elusive first win.

Until Saturday.

CU overcame an early deficit to take a 2-1 triumph over geographical rival Bluefield College (VA) on October 16 at the East River Soccer Complex in Bluefield, WV.

The host Rams, in their homecoming game, took the lead just 1:40 into the contest, when Timothy Michaels found the back of the net.

But the deficit didn't last long. Concord's Scott Funston squared the match in the 13th minute, assisted by Tyler Ferrar. It was Funston's first goal of the season.

CU goalkeeper Matt Hamilton helped keep the score 1-1 by making all four of his saves in the first 20 minutes of the second half.

The Mountain Lions would take the lead for good on Ivan Deyanov's unassisted goal in the 83rd minute. The junior has scored in each of Concord's last three matches.

Concord continued to press the attack in the final minutes. Richie Vincent and Ferrar each came close to a clincher with shots on goal just :43 apart, but BC goalkeeper made the save on both.
