CROSS COUNTRY: A ONE, AND A TWO

CU WOMEN 1st, MEN 2nd AT CONCORD INVITATIONAL

On a crisp, cool, postcard-like Saturday morning, CU's Cross Country teams just missed a sweep in the annual Concord Invitational.

The women's team claimed a championship and the men's team was runner-up at Pipestem State Park.

Danielle Pye, the third-ranked woman in the WVIAC, led Concord to a sweep of the top four individual spots. The senior from Lancaster, England covered the 5K course in 19:34.27 and was the only woman to finish in less than 20 minutes.
Chelsea Callaway was second, Rachel Williams third and Shawnee Carnett fourth.

West Virginia Wesleyan took the next six top ten spots, but Concord's top four sweep, combined with Tabitha Whited's 11th place run, gave the Lady Lions 21 team points, 14 better than the Bobcats. Ohio Valley finished a distant third.

For Pye, it was her second victory of the season. She won the women's division at the Greensboro Pacesetters meet on September 25.

CU's Robby Peters finished second in the men's race, behind West Virginia Wesleyan's Nate Edwards and ahead of former Concord runner Lance McDaniel, competing as an unattached athlete.

Nick Lucento and Nathan Rees gave the Mountain Lions two more top ten results, respectively finishing eighth and ninth. Craig Pritt was (12th) and Brad Dugan (14th) rounded out Concord's top five.

The Mountain Lions 41 team points were 13 back of West Virginia Wesleyan. Glenville State was third.

Concord now sets its sights on the WVIAC Championships on Saturday, November 6 in Glenville, WV.

“It was an awesome day for the women today. We're coming around perfectly,” said CU head coach Mike Cox. “The men looked good overall. We didn't have two of our top guys in Szymon (Rola) and Sterling (Snyder), so when you factor them in with everyone else, it's going to be interesting.”
