CONCORD HANGS ON FOR WELL-EARNED DRAW AT WJU

It would have been easy for Concord's Men's Soccer team to throw in the towel after last Tuesday's match against the University of Charleston.

The Mountain Lions, seeking their first win of the season, played step-for-step with the 4th-ranked Golden Eagles, only to suffer a heartbreaking 1-0 loss in overtime.

But instead of giving in, Concord responded with its biggest offensive outburst of the year and earned a hard-fought 4-4 double-overtime draw at Wheeling Jesuit in a WVIAC match Saturday afternoon.

CU held on for the road point even after losing both its goalkeepers and having to play defender Murray Brown in net for the final 14 minutes of the match.

The host Cardinals outshot Concord 25-16, but shots on goal were level at ten.

“It was a great game for us,” CU head coach Steve Barrett said after the match. “We lost our starting keeper in the first minutes, then our second on a red card in overtime. The guys played brilliantly, playing with ten men in the OT.”

Concord lost starting keeper Jamie Greenwood to injury in the 7th minute, with Matt Hamilton taking his place.
Meanwhile, up front, CU struck first, on a penalty kick from Ivan Deyanov in the 8th minute.
WJU would respond with two goals late in the half to take a 2-1 lead into halftime. But their advantage didn't last long.

Ryne Shuff scored two goals nine minutes apart – the first in the 50th minute, the second in the 59th, each off an assist by Tyler Farrar – to put Concord ahead 3-2. Unfortunately, CU's advantage didn't last long either. Paul Silverstone drew WJU level with a score in the 64th minute, and Stephen Hawthorne put the Cardinals ahead with a penalty kick in the 79th.

The Mountain Lions, who had scored three goals in their first ten matches, scrambled for an equalizer. Sebastian Escobar provided it with an unassisted goal in the 87th minute.

In the first overtime, Hamilton received a red card for handling the ball outside the box in the 97th minute. Brown moved in to replace him. The Cardinals couldn't convert the opportunity, however, as Hawthorne's penalty kick bounced off the post.

WJU mustered two more shots before time ran out, both by Kevin Robson. The first shot, in the 107th minute, went wide. Brown made a save on the other in the 108th minute.
