HOME, AT LAST

CU SWEEPS CHOWAN FOR FIRST HOME WIN OF 2010

The first time Concord's Volleyball team met Chowan University this season, the Lady Lions dispatched the Hawks in four sets, on a neutral court, for what was CU's first victory.

The second time the two CU's met, Concord needed just three sets, and claimed its first home win of 2010.

Concord's 25-17, 25-17, 25-23 victory Friday night at the Carter Center was its third in a row overall, and it raised CU's record to 5-11.

The two squads traded points early in the first set. Concord opened an 11-8 lead, then stretched the advantage to 16-10 and forced the Hawks to spend a timeout.

The Lady Lions responded well to the stoppage. A kill from Kayla Martin pushed the lead to 17-10, and Martin and Tori Fornadel combined for a “roof” that made the score 18-10. Later, an ace from Meredith Shifley put CU in command at 22-14, and Concord closed out the match from there.

The second set started back-and-forth like the first. Concord took its first lead at 11-10 and Chowan took a timeout. Again, the Lady Lions thrived after the stoppage, scoring four of the next five points to go ahead 15-11 and force the Hawks to spend another stop.

Concord methodically extended its lead, erased any doubt after a “roof” by Jasmin Sutherland that moved the advantage to 21-14, and went on to secure the set.

Chowan bolted out to a 4-0 lead to start the third set. Concord answered the early surge and squared the score at 9-9. The Hawks re-established a narrow advantage, but CU pushed back and took its first lead at 18-17.

The scoring then went back-and-forth. A kill by Helen Theisen put CU up 24-22; the Hawks would tally to get within one, but then committed a hitting error that gave the Lady Lions match point.
