With sisters Sierra and Jolysa Brown each posting a double-double, the Concord Women's Basketball team routed local rival Bluefield College 83-58 Monday night in the second day of the annual Lady Lion Classic at the Carter Center.
The win completes a sweep for CU at its own event. Concord defeated Milligan College (TN) 72-60 on Sunday.
Jolysa Brown, a sophomore, scored 18 points and pulled down 18 rebounds.
Sierra Brown, Concord's only senior, went for 17 points and 12 rebounds.
The sisters from nearby Hinton, WV were two of Concord's four double-digit scorers.
Division I transfer Camisha Alexander of Beckley, making her first start for the Mountain Lions, ignited Concord's offense early and finished with 17 points.
Freshman Sidney Lindsey added 13 points.
The Mountain Lions' defense was strong again. Concord limited BC to .311 field goal shooting (23-74) a day after allowing Milligan to shoot just .306.
Meanwhile, CU shot a respectable .439 (25-57), scoring two more field goals in 17 fewer attempts than the Lady Rams.
Buoyed by the hard work of the Brown sisters, Concord enjoyed a 50-29 advantage in rebounds.
Playing much of the game at Bluefield College's preferred frantic pace, the Lady Lions committed 20 turnovers -- 11 more than the day before.
But the giveaways were nearly completely offset by 18 assists. Junior point guard Sarah Blevins led the Lions with seven assists, while committing no turnovers.
The Lady Rams' physical defense contributed to their 23 fouls, which resulted in Concord having a banner night at the free throw line. The Lady Lions finished 26-31 (.839), while Bluefield College was just 3-10.
Kiara Honore led the visitors with 12 points.
In Monday's early game, Milligan College recovered from a 33-18 halftime deficit to stun Fairmont State, 74-56. The Lady Buffaloes outscored the Fighting Falcons 56-23 in the second half.
Heather Mandela led Milligan with 27 points and 12 rebounds. Ashley Vavrek topped Fairmont State with 18 points, while Rachel Murray pulled down 14 rebounds.
Concord opens its 2009-2010 WVIAC schedule Thursday night, with a visit to Davis & Elkins.
The game will be broadcast on Classic Rock 102 The River (WMTD 102.3 FM) and webcast at theriver102.com, starting with the "Mountain Lion Preview" show at 5:00 pm EST. Tip-off is set for 5:30.
