Two forfeits were the difference as Concord fell to Bluefield State, 5-4, in the first round of the WVIAC Women's Tennis Tournament Wednesday afternoon in Bluefield.
Concord got victories from Lauren Lambert at #2 singles and Minori Furahata at #4 singles. Lambert defeated Jennifer Fink 6-1, 6-1; Furahata defeated Niccatti Honaker by the same score.
Concord's #1 singles player, Emily Fletcher, fell to Yelena Fadina 6-0, 6-0. The Mountain Lions' #3, Christine Knables, bowed to Virginia Smith 6-1, 6-3.
Concord's #1 doubles team of Fletcher and Lambert defeated BSC's Fadina and Smith 8-6.
The Mountain Lions' #2 team of Knables and Furahata rolled the Lady Blues' Fink and Honaker 8-3.
CU could not field players at #5 and #6 singles, and the forfeits gave Bluefield State enough victories to advance to the next round.
The Lady Blues meet defending champion University of Charleston in the conference quarterfinals Friday morning at the Watt Powell Annex Courts in Charleston.
