Athens, WV Decked out in pink warm-up shirts and bright pink socks, Concord's Lady Mountain Lions brought Breast Cancer Awareness to the court tonight for their match up against the Salem International Lady Tigers. Concord defeated the Lady Tigers 75-54.
The game started off in the favor the Tigers, going up by five in the first three minutes before Amber Showalter made one of two foul shots. After that the Lady Lions started picking up their game. Coming back to tie it up 10-10 with thirteen minutes left in the half. Two back to back three pointers by Megan Cole, gave Concord the led 22-19. the two teams traded buckets back and forth, but Concord went into the locker room with a 31-29 lead.
Percentages were not where any coach would want them to be going into the second half. The Lady Lions were only 29% from the floor, making only 9 of 31 attempts, and only 33% from behind the arc, getting only 9 chances. The Lady Lions saw the foul line 16 times and made 10 of those shots going 63%. Salem International went 37% from the floor, 27% from behind the line, but only saw the line 4 times making all 4.
In the second half, the Lady Lions started hitting their mark. Capitalizing on turnovers and hitting the boards hard. Thus giving the ladies an early lead. The closest the game was during the second half was when Melissa Anger made a jumper to make it 31-31 all during the first minute. After that it was all about the pink socked team. Concord went 55% from the floor, 50% from the three point line, but got less looks at the basket from the free point line, going 7 of 12 for 58%. The Lady Lions' defense held the Tigers to 36% from the floor, giving up only one three pointer making them drop to 14%, but letting the Tigers see the line 10 times for 60%. The strong second half gave Concord the advantage as the blew away the Lady Tigers 75-54.
Concord was led by Becca Flanagan with 17 points and 4 rebounds. Samm Nester chipped in 14 points, 7 assists, and pulled down 5 rebounds. Megan Cole went 4-7 from three point land, adding 12 points on to the Lady Lions' score. This was an all around win the Lady Lions.
The Lady Lions will face Davis and Elkins Monday at home, tip off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The Lady Lions are still tied with Fairmont State and West Liberty for second in the WVIAC conference. Each holding a 12 -3 conference record.
