Athens, WV- Concord blew past Bluefield State College on senior day as they looked to do the same against Alderson-Broaddus on Monday night. The Lady Lions disproved the name of the Battlers as they defeated them 80-65.
Concord looked for revenge of an earlier season loss to the Battlers as the night began in Athens. Alderson-Broaddus took no time in taking an early lead against the Lady Lions as they started out with an early 5-2 lead.
However, their lead was short lived as Becca Flanagan would hit a lay-up at the 14:07 mark to put the Lady Lions up 13-11. This lead may seem insignificant to the human eye, but the Lady Battlers wouldn't think so as they would never see the lead again.
Over the next 7 minutes Concord would go on a 15-5 run which was capped by a Bre Kyle three-pointer. Concord was leading by 26-16. The game would be steady as the half dwindled down. Meghan Cole would hit a jumper with a couple of seconds on the clock as the crowd erupted. Concord led comfortably at the break 39-26.
The Lady Battlers failed to "battle" in the second half as they never cut the score under 10 points. The second half began as the teams exchanging buckets. Concord would ensue to push their lead and at the 10 minute mark the Lady Lions had led by 20 points at 61-41 which capped by a Sierra Brown lay-up.
Concord would led by as many as 24 points in the second enabling them to be able to empty their bench for the last 4 minutes of the game. Concord would finish off the Lady Battlers 80-65.
Concord's performance was a complete performance as they had 5 players in double-digits. Samm Nester led the way with 18 points and 5 rebounds. Amber Showalter had a great game with 13 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists. Sierra Brown came off the bench to have 12 points and 7 rebounds. Cassidy Smith had 11 points and 4 rebounds. Becca Flanagan added 10 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists. Finally, once again Jamie Cluesman had a wonderful assist performance. Jamie had 5 points and 12 assists.
Concord (WVIAC Tournament 1-0) earned their 20th win of season with the win tonight. Concord now has put together back to back 20 win seasons. The win enables the Lady Lions to move onto Charleston. They will be playing West Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday, Febuary 27th at 1:00pm.
