Athens, WV- The stage was set as the Lady Lion Soccer team welcomed their biggest opponent, Wheeling Jesuit, to Anderson Field. Last year the Cardinals defeated the Lady Lions in overtime in the WVIAC tournament championship. The Lady Lions knocked the Cardinals from their perch in a 1-0 win today.
This game was a CU at the Game sponsored event and drew a record crowd of around 200 people. The game was very physical, with both teams chalking up bumps, bruises, and even bloody noses. However, through determination and mental toughness, the Lady Lions were able to defeat the number one ranked team in the WVIAC.
Concord's solo goal came in the 17th minute when Sam McRae and Gemma Nortcliffe took advantage of a two-on-one opportunity. McRae's pass set up Nortcliffe as she flipped the ball over a diving Jesuit goalie to give Concord the 1-0 lead which led to the final score.
Sarah Coelho record another shutout at the goal for Concord with 5 saves. The Lady Lions outshot the Cardinals 15-14. The Cardinals received two yellow cards to top off their disappointing afternoon. One card was given at the end of the first half to Laura Bruno and the other card was given to the Head Coach of Wheeling in the 77th minute.
The Lady Lions (6-4-1, 4-1-1 WVIAC) will be back in action at home on Tuesday, October 2nd at 4:00pm to take on non-conference opponent King College.
