One of the most successful sprinters in school history, R.J. Anderson has been an assistant under head coach Mike Cox since the fall of 2013.
Anderson has been apart of the staff that has helped guide the men's cross country team to three straight Mountain East Conference Championships as well as making an appearance at the NCAA Division II Championships for the first time in school history in November 2016. The women's cross country team also won a MEC Championship in2 018.Â
Under Anderson's watch, Jonathan Gore was named the MEC High Point/MVP at the conference championship meet in the spring of 2017.Â
In his time as an assistant at CU, Anderson has coached 16 all-conference athletes in the sprint events.
Concord's women's 4x400-meter relay finished second at the 2019 MEC Championship while Josea Smith was a podium finisher in the 400-meter hurdles for a second straight year with Anderson's guidance. Additionally, Anderson also helped Emilee Henry become a four-year all-conference performer with a third-place finish in the 400-meter dash during her senior conference championship meet.
At the MEC Championships in 2018, Isaiah Bowman, Kelshawn Grant and Jamal Petty were named all-conference with the help of Anderson's coaching. The trio along with Wes Flemming broke the school record in the 4x100-meter relay in a time of 41.99 seconds.
Anderson helped coach the Mountain East Conference Freshman of the Year in 2016 in Henry who finished top three at the conference meet. Additionally, Anderson tutored the men's 4x400-meter relay team that won the 2016 individual championship at the MEC Track Championship.
In 2015, Akia Morris and Jessica Rolle both won sprint events at the conference meet under Anderson's watch. During Anderson's time as an assistant coach, CU has set seven school records in the sprint events.
Anderson is a native of Mobile, Ala. and graduate of Armwood High School in Armwood, Fla. Anderson spent three seasons in the Texas Rangers minor league system advancing to high class A baseball in Spokane, Wash. After leaving pro baseball, he spent three seasons (2008-2010) on the Concord football team as a defensive back and punt returner.
Anderson began to flourish on the track during the 2010 outdoor season. After the conference championship he placed second in the 100-meter dash.
During the 2011 indoor track season, Anderson won the 60-meter dash at the Virginia Tech Challenge clocking 6.80 seconds. Anderson claimed another runner-up finish at the outdoor conference championship in 2011.
He grabbed three first place finishes during the 2012 indoor season including winning 60-meter and 200-meter dashes at the NCAA Division II Challenge at Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
Anderson’s greatest accomplishment on the track came later in the 2012 indoor season when he earned all-American honors in the 60-meter dash sprinting to a time of 6.80 seconds.
During the outdoor season that year, Anderson qualified for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships at Colorado State University- Pueblo in Pueblo, Colo. He finished 13th with a time of 10.60.
Anderson holds four school records including the 55-meter (6.31 seconds) 60-meter (6.78) and 200-meter (21.77) dashes indoor and holds the 100-meter dash (10.51) outdoor record.
Anderson is married to the former Brittany Keys, together the couple has a son, Asher, who is five years old.
