Concord University senior mid-distance runner
Shawnee Carnett earned All-America honors after finishing second in the 800-meter run last weekend at the 2014 NCAA Division II Track & Field Championships at the Grand Valley State Track & Field Complex in Allendale, Michigan.Â
Â
Carnett closes her collegiate career as just the 17th runner in NCAA Division II history to have won two 800-meter national championships. She also leaves as one of 12 800-meter competitors all-time to have won national titles at both the indoor and outdoor national championship meets.
Â
She completed the race in 2:07.53, finishing one spot behind Seattle Pacific's McKayla Fricker who won the race with a time of 2:06.18. Last Saturday marked the sixth time in Carnett's career that she has been named an All-American.
Â
Carnett began the race near the back of the nine-woman field for the two lap race. As the race neared its second lap Carnett navigated her way towards the front of the pack, moving into second place behind Fricker. With 150 meters remaining in the race Carnett attempted to run down Fricker, but was unable to overtake Fricker who pulled away down the stretch.Â
Â
Nicole Burlinson (Ursuline), Monique Thomson (Lincoln, Mo.), Terah Fullman-Ege (Lindenwood), Jhevere Hall (Lincoln, Mo.), Maria Curit (Stonehill), Sabrina Pimentel (UC San Diego) and Chante Roberts (Adams State) rounded out the field. The NCAA recognizes the top eight finishers in each event as All-Americans.
