After being in last place at the halfway point in the finals of the 800-meter run at Saturday's NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships, Concord University women's track senior Shawnee Carnett made a furious comeback to finish in first place and earn another national title in her storied career.

After nearly being tripped at the 300-meter mark to begin the race, Carnett patiently sat in the back of the eight-runner pack until making her final push with two laps left as she passed six runners in the following 200 meters to move into second place. When the final lap began, Carnett passed the leader and proceeded to pull away from the rest of the field to clock a winning time of 2:08.76.

The victory marked the second time Carnett has won an 800-meter national title; she also took home top honors in the 2011 outdoor 800-meter championship race.

Seattle Pacific's McKayla Fricker finished in second place with a time of 2:09.25 and Marissa Bongers of Nebraska-Kearney rounded out the top three by crossing the finish line in 2:10.48.

Carnett had already secured her fifth All-American honor by qualifying for championship race. She entered the 800-meter final with the top seeded time of 2:09.18.

The Sugar Grove, Va. native is the only national champion in the history of Concord athletics, individually or as a team.

Carnett will now focus her efforts towards the outdoor season where she will aim for a third national championship and a sixth All-America honor in what will be her final season of eligibility.
