Varela-Payne tossed his first career complete game as he struck out a career-high nine batters and only allowed three hits and one earned run in a 9-1 victory over Kutztown. Varela-Payne needed 92 pitches to sail through the KU lineup over seven innings. After giving up a run in the second inning, the Raleigh, North Carolina native finished the game by retiring 14 of the final 15 batters he faced.
