Gardner was the 400-meter dash champion at the Mountain East Conference Championships as he set the school record in a time of 47.63 seconds. It was Gardner's first career championship in any event at the MEC Indoor or Outdoor Championships, and in the process he moved up to second in the Atlantic Region. Additionally, Gardner helped CU's 4x400-meter relay team earn All-MEC Honorable Mention with a third-place finish.
