SOFTBALL: GETTING THERE

CU PUSHES DEFENDING CHAMPS

Concord's softball team, under first-year head coach Alisa Tasler, knows it has some work ahead of it in the quest to join the top ranks of the WVIAC.

Out At 1st
Wednesday, taking on three-time defending league champion West Virginia Wesleyan in a doubleheader at the CU complex in Athens, the Mountain Lions showed they can play with the conference elite.   Concord dropped the first game, 8-1, but pushed the Bobcats to the limit before suffering a 1-0 heartbreaker in the nightcap.

GAME ONE
BOXSCORE / PLAY-BY-PLAY

The Bobcats broke open a scoreless game with four runs in the top of the 2nd, with the key blow a two-out, two-run double by Paige Cummings.  WVWC added two more runs in the 4th and single runs in the 5th and 6th.

Concord got on the board in the 6th.  Becca Gleason led off with a single, moved to second on Stephanie Harper's sacrifice, and scored after a single by Lacey McDougall.

GAME TWO
BOXSCORE / PLAY-BY-PLAY

Lacey McDougall Windup
Tasler called on McDougall to be the starting pitcher, and the freshman – making her first appearance in the circle since March 15 – nearly produced a shutout.

The right-hander from Chesapeake, VA was perfect through 4 2/3 innings and didn't allow a hit until there were two outs in the top of the 6th.

Meanwhile, however, Bobcats starter Hillary Perez-Ashley was keeping Concord in check.  The senior allowed just two singles and a walk through six innings – enough time for her teammates to solve McDougall.

In the top of the 7th, Cummings led off with a single, was sacrificed to second, moved to third on a passed ball, and scored the game's only run on Jacqueline Omichinski's sacrifice fly.  Perez-Ashley retired CU in order in the bottom of the inning.

McDougall allowed just two singles and one walk and faced only four batters over the minimum in her complete-game effort.

Up next for Concord (12-14, 1-3) is a trip to Bristol, TN for its final non-conference matchup of the season.  CU visits King College, with first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
