LADY LIONS SPLIT FOUR GAMES TO BEGIN NEW SEASON

Concord's 2012 softball season – the first for new head coach Alisa Tasler –began with a split of a four-game weekend road trip.

The Lady Lions swept a non-conference doubleheader at Fayetteville State (NC) on Saturday, February 11; the next day, CU dropped a pair of games at St. Andrew's Presbyterian College.

At Fayetteville State, Game 1:  CU 2, FSU 1

CU outhit the Broncos 9-3, and got a complete from freshman starting pitcher Lacey McDougall.
Concord spotted the hosts a 1-0 lead after the 1st inning, but put together a decisive rally in the top of the 5th.
Ericka Davies led off with a single and advanced to second on an error.  Jessica Seymour singled, moving Davies to third.  Davies scored on a double steal to tie the score.
Singles from Becca Gleason and Whitney Carrigan reignited the rally; Gleason scored the winning run on another Bronco error.



At Fayetteville State, Game 2:  CU 7, FSU 3

Starting pitcher Stephanie Harper, battling the flu, gave CU another complete-game pitching performance.
Concord took a 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st on RBI singles from Brantlea Wood and Tamara Smith.  Fayetteville State scored a single run in the 2nd, but CU answered with another two-run rally in the 4th.
Wood reached on an error to lead off the inning and was replaced by pinch-runner Emily GallagherLaura Kaminski reached on another error, and Gallagher scored on FSU's third misplay of the inning.  Smith drove in Kaminski with another RBI single.
Fayetteville State moved within 4-3 after a two-run rally in the 5th.  But Concord padded its lead with two runs of its own in the 6th – Ericka Davies scored on a wild pitch, and McDougall drove in Kaminski with an RBI single.  FSU ended the rally by recording an unassisted triple play.
The Lady Lions added an insurance run in the 7th, benefitting from two more Broncos errors.



At St. Andrew's Presbyterian, Game 1:  SAPC 6, CU 1

McDougall went the distance for second straight day, but took the loss after allowing five earned runs on ten hits.
The Knights took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd, but CU cut the deficit in half on Wood's solo home run to lead off the 4th.
SAPC tallied a single run in the bottom of the 4th and put the game out of reach with three runs in the 6th.

The weekend ended with a slugfest that ended in extra innings.

CU stormed out to a 7-0 lead in the top of the 1st, sending ten batters to the plate.  Five straight Lady Lions reached base after two outs.
The Knights moved within 7-4 after scoring once in the 2nd and three more times in the 3rd.  Concord came back with Kaminski's two-run home run in the 4th.
St. Andrew's replied with three runs in the bottom of the inning to make the score 9-7, then took a 12-9 lead after scoring five times in the 5th.
Concord reclaimed the lead with a five-run in the 6th, highlighted by two-run singles by Ericka Davies and McDougall. 

But the Knights moved back in front, 17-14, with a five-run rally of their own in the bottom of the inning.
The Lady Lions came back to tie the game – and force extra innings -- with a clutch three-run rally in the top of the 7th.  Smith and Sheila Davies produced RBI singles, and Workman squared the score with a sacrifice fly.
Concord scored in the top of the 8th when Carrigan scored on Wood's fielder's choice, but the Knights tallied twice in the bottom of the inning to claim the victory.


Up next for Concord (2-2) is another two-day, four-game weekend road trip.  The Lady Lions go to Harrogate, TN to visit Lincoln Memorial University for a 2:00 pm doubleheader on Saturday, February 18.  The next day, CU travels to Charlotte, NC, for a 3:00 pm twinbill against Johnson C. Smith.
