VOLLEYBALL: NO REST, NO PROBLEM

BUSY LADY LIONS SWEEP BLUEFIELD STATE AND WVU TECH

Spike vs BSC 1024 x 1542 (SS)
If Concord's Volleyball team felt any ill effects from their five-set non-conference defeat at Southern Virginia University Tuesday night – and long drive home -- they didn't show it on Wednesday.

The Lady Lions showed no signs of road weariness, sweeping aside two opponents in a doubleheader at the Carter Center.

CU brushed aside Bluefield State in a WVIAC match (25-9, 25-16, 25-10) before dispatching WVU Tech in a non-conference contest (25-18, 25-14, 25-21).

Concord played three matches in less than 24 hours.

Against Bluefield State on Wednesday, Concord imposed its will early -- CU hit a scintillating .577 in winning the first set by 16 points.  Concord cooled off after that, but still hit .329 for the match and floored 35 kills to the Lady Blues' 14.

Freshman Brytni Willis topped Concord with eight kills (while hitting .462), with Sarah Jones adding seven, Lindsay Smith six and Tori Fornadel five.

The Lady Lions served up 11 aces – six from freshman Nikki McMillan – to one for the visitors.

WVU Tech provided a sterner test.  But the Lady Lions played consistently through all three sets in completing the Wednesday sweep.  CU hit .388 in the first set, .318 in the second and .333 in the third.

The kill totals were relative even – 27 for Concord, 24 for Tech – but the Golden Bears tried 108 total attacks to just 62 for Concord.  The visitors also committed 14 hitting errors to the Lady Lions' five.

CU head coach Kate Southcott was able to work 14 players into the rotation, with eight getting kills.  Jones led the way with eight, while Smith added six.
