LADY LIONS BEGIN HOMECOMING WEEK WITH SPLIT

Concord's Volleyball team got Homecoming Week rolling Tuesday afternoon, with a non-conference triangular match at the Carter Center.

The Lady Lions dropped their first match to King College (TN), 3-0, but bounced back to sweep Mercer County rival Bluefield State.

In the first match, the visiting Lady Tornado downed CU 25-15, 25-22, 25-17. Concord hit a respectable .229 with 19 kills, but couldn't overcome a balanced attack from the other side of the net. King floored 34 kills, hit .239, served nine aces and doubled up CU in assists, 28-14. Four King players had at least five kills, led by 13 from Ashley Pittman.

Sarah Jones topped Concord with five kills, with Helen Theisen adding four and Christa Prewitt and Jasmin Sutherland three apiece. Theisen handed out 11 assists, and Amanda Walker had a match-high 24 digs. Walker was one of six CU players with at least nine digs.

Concord out-blocked King, 7-1.



After waiting out the triangular's middle match between King and Bluefield State, Concord returned to the floor and dispatched the Lady Blues 25-4, 25-19, 25-16.

The Lady Lions hit. 232, compared to -.014 for Bluefield State, and out-killed the visitors 30-12. Concord enjoyed shutouts in two categories – aces (11-0) and assists (21-0).

Senior Tori Fornadel paced Concord with eight kills. Jones had six and Sutherland four.
Theisen distributed a match-high 13 assists and Lindsey Smith topped the team with seven digs.

Concord out-blocked Bluefield State, 6-1.

The Lady Lions will enjoy the rest of Homecoming Week and won't return to play until Tuesday, September 27, with a non-conference contest at Southern Virginia University. The match is scheduled to begin at 6:00 pm.
