LADY LIONS DROP PAIR IN SOUTH CAROLINA

VALDOSTA STATE, ERSKINE BEST CU

Concord Volleyball's two-match winning streak came to an end Friday, September 10, with a pair of losses in the first day of the USC-Aiken Invitational in Aiken, SC.

In their opening match, the Lady Lions lost a close first set to Valdosta State (GA) on the way to a 26-24, 25-17, 25-13 defeat.

Amber Miller led CU with seven kills, with Kayla Martin and Emily Wilson adding five each. Helen Theisen contributed 18 assists and 11 digs.

Valdosta State outhit Concord .336 to .094, including a .426-.036 in the final two sets.

"We played out best and worst volleyball of the year in the same match," said CU head coach Kate Southcott.  "In the first set we were confident and communicating and played excellent defense.  But they got the better of us in the next two sets.  They're very strong and fast."

In their second match, Concord fell to Erskine College (SC) 25-16, 25-19, 25-23.

Amber Miller again floored seven kills; Wilson and Rebecca Lovejoy chipped in four apiece.  Theisen added 15 assists and seven digs.

"Erskine is another good team, but we played inspired volleyball," said Southcott.  "The teams we've seen in this tournament are better than most in the WVIAC, in my opinion.  Coming here is all about playing better competition and fighting for every point."

The Lady Lions have two back-to-back matches at the USC-Aiken Invitational Saturday, September 11. Concord meets Anderson College (SC) at 12:00 pm, then faces the University of Montevallo (AL) at 2:00 pm.
