Concord freshman Shawnee Carnett had to wait longer than expected to compete in the 800 meters at the NCAA Division II National Track & Field Championships.

The preliminary runs were originally scheduled for Friday, May 28th.  But rain in Charlotte, NC washed out Friday's schedule and led NCAA officials to stage a "timed section final" the next day.

When the weather was more cooperative on Saturday, Carnett rose to the occasion.

The freshman from Sugar Grove, VA set a new Concord record of 2:09.84 to finish 7th and secure All-America honors.

"Awesome, awesome, awesome," marveled Concord head coach Mike Cox immediately after the event at the Irwin Belk Track Complex.

In a "timed section final," the field is divided into two groups.  The top times are used to determine who finishes in what position; ie, the fastest time from either group wins the championship, the second-fastest is runner-up, etc.

Carnett won her section, but six runners in the other heat posted quicker times.

Carnett finished well above her seeding.  She was originally slated 15th out of the 19 runners in the field.

She earned a spot at Nationals by posting a then-Concord record of 2:12.26 at the Duke Twilight meet in Durham, NC on May 9th.

Carnett is the reigning West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Rookie Athlete of the Year.  She won the WVIAC's Athlete of the Week award four times during the 2010 indoor and outdoor seasons.
