Monday night, the Concord women's basketball team found itself going against Glenville State, practitioners of “The System.” The Pioneers have used their up-tempo, full-court, substituting-five-at-a-time style to become the nation's highest-scoring team at 96.6 points per game.

The Lady Lions countered with a defense that allowed just 65.4 points per game while allowing opponents to .376 field goal shooting.

Concord played Glenville State's style in 103-94 road win last November 22.  Monday night, CU's defensive system trumped the Pioneers' “System.”

Concord ended the game with a 14-4 run and limited GSC to their lowest point total against Division II competition this season, defeating the WVIAC-leading Pioneers 79-66 at the Carter Center.

Glenville State used a 13-4 run to take a 27-25 lead with 3:07 left in the 1st half.  But Holly Bibb sank a three-pointer on CU's next trip, and the Lady Lions would stay in front for the rest of the night.

Concord took a 34-31 lead into halftime, and methodically opened up an 11-point advantage, at 60-49, with 8:08 left in the game.  Back-to-back three-pointers by Danielle Woodmore and Beth Deren, however, sparked a 13-5 Glenville State rally that closed the gap to 65-62 with 3:57to go.

A jumper by Jolysa Brown put CU ahead 67-62 with 2:58 left, setting the stage for the shot of the game.  With the shot clock at :04, and facing an inbounds play, Anna Truckley passed to Camisha Alexander, who drained a 28-foot three-pointer at the buzzer that stretched the Lady Lions' lead to 70-62 with 1:49 left.

Bertrand's Big FT
Tenisha Wilson made a jumper to pull GSC within 70-64 with 1:21 to go, but Andrea Bertrand's clutch three-point play on the next trip (right) extended Concord's lead to 73-64 with :55 left.  Bertrand, Alexander and Brown each went 2-2 from the line after that to close out the victory.

Concord held GSC to .386 (27-70) from the field and just seven assists.  CU had 20 assists on their 28 made field goals and committed just six turnovers – 18 fewer less than Glenville State usually forces.

Brown posted her 13th double-double of the season – the 43rd of her career – with game highs of 24 points and 14 rebounds.  The senior center from Hinton, WV shot 7-11 from the floor and 10-14 from the line, while matching Truckley with a game-high six assists.

Bertrand just missed a double-double, with 18 points and eight rebounds.  Alexander and Amanda Smith finished with 11 points each.

Wilson led Glenville State (16-6, 14-4) with 21 points.  Mishae Miles grabbed 13 rebounds.

Up next for Concord (17-6, 14-5) is a visit to Fairmont State for the last road game of the regular season.  Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 pm at Joe Retton Arena in Fairmont, WV.

The game will be broadcast on ESPN Radio 102.3 The Ticket, beginning with the “Mountain Lions Preview Show” at 1:40.  A link to The Ticket's webcast can be found in the navigation bar near the top of the women's basketball homepage here on www.cumountainlions.com.
