LADY LIONS TAKE GAME ONE; RAIN TAKES GAME TWO

Concord's Softball team defeated one opponent Wednesday afternoon. But another had far too much power to overcome.

The Lady Lions took a dramatic extra-inning victory in the first game of their scheduled non-conference doubleheader at WVU Tech. But both CU and the Golden Bears fell victim to the weather, which washed out the nightcap.

CU won the first game 6-5 in eight innings, and in game two held a 2-0 lead in the top of the 4th when a springtime squall forced the contest to be cancelled.

GAME ONE

Stephanie Sang put WVU Tech in front with an RBI single in the bottom of the 1st, then added to it with a three-run home run in the 3rd that pushed the Bears' advantage to 4-0.

Concord responded in the top of the 4th. Brooke Bowling led off with a double, went to third on a fly ball to right, and scored on a wild pitch.

The Lady Lions re-started their rally with two outs. Sheila Davies singled to right and Rachel Mack bunted for a single. Ericka Davies hit a ground ball to shortstop, but Tech first baseman Jessica Stapleton dropped the throw. The error scored Sheila Davies and allowed Mack to move to third and Ericka Davies to second.

Tiffany Kobordo made the Golden Bears pay by scalding a full-count single to right, bringing in Mack and Davies and tying the game at 4-4.

Tech took a 5-4 lead on Ali Holmes' RBI single in the top of the 5th. They had a chance to add on, with runners on second and third with one out, but CU pitcher Rachel Mack (above left) got out of the jam. Keeping a one-run margin proved to be critical.

In the top of the 7th, Becca Gleason crushed a one-out solo home run to left (above) to tie the game at 5-5.
Tech would get a runner to third with two outs in the bottom of the inning, but Mack slammed the door again.

The game went to the international tie-breaker in the top of the 8th, with a runner placed at second to start the inning.

Stephanie Harper led off the top of the inning with a single, lifting CU to a 6-5 lead.

Mack threw a wild pitch on her first offering in the bottom of the inning, advancing Bears' base runner Ali Holmes to third. One out later, Holmes tried to score on a passed ball, but CU catcher Katelyn Williams pounced the ball and fired to Mack, who tagged out Holmes at the plate.

Mack then struck out Whitney Patrick to secure the victory.

Rachel Mack got the pitching victory in relief, giving up just one run on three hits in six innings.

Brooke Bowling Pitch #2 at WVU Tech 314 x 235
GAME TWO

The Lady Lions jumped on Sang, Tech's starting pitcher, for two runs in the top of the 1st. Gleason led off with a solid single to center; Mack put down an attempted sacrifice bunt that led to a two-base throwing error on Holmes, the Bears' third baseman.
Bowling then hit a sharp grounder that went between Holmes' feet for another error, scoring Gleason and Mack.

In the circle, Bowling (right) kept WVU Tech off the scoreboard through the first three innings.

Shortly before 6:00 pm, the storm hit and ended the game.

Up next for Concord (9-14) is a non-conference doubleheader against Kentucky State on Friday, March 25, at the Lady Lions' home field adjacent to Callaghan Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm. Admission is free.
