MEN'S BASKETBALL: WIN ONE

McBRIDE GETS FIRST COACHING VICTORY AS CU DEFEATS WEST VIRGINIA STATE

Kent McBride picked up his first win as the Concord men's basketball team's head coach Wednesday night, when the Mountain Lions defeated West Virginia State 72-66 at the Carter Center.

It was Concord's WVIAC opener this season.

CU employed two important rallies to fend off the Yellow Jackets (1-2, 0-1).  The first was an 18-5 run – sparked by back-to-back three-point shots by Javaughn Acree-Manuel – that put the Mountain Lions ahead 34-22 with 3:27 left in the 1st half.  The second rally was much shorter – CU scored the first seven points of the 2nd half – but it propelled the Mountain Lions to a 46-26 lead and gave them more than enough cushion to withstand WVSU's late comeback bid.

Acree-Manuel stung the Yellow Jackets with 34 points, shooting 11-20 from the field and 8-14 from three-point range.  Cory Willard hit 4-7 from outside the arc to finish with 12 points.  As a team, Concord was 13-26 from long range.  The Mountain Lions had 21 assists on 26 made field goals.

Freshman point guard Mike Boyd handed out eight assists with only two turnovers.  Natwan Young added six points, eight rebounds, three assists, two steals and a blocked shot.

David Ford had 17 points and ten rebounds for West Virginia State.

Up next for Concord (1-1, 1-0) is a visit to defending WVIAC champion West Liberty, next Saturday, November 19.  Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
