Last-second, game-winning scores are somewhat common in basketball, and even football.  But not in soccer.

Which makes Monday's outcome all the tougher to take for Concord.

The Mountain Lions' Men's Soccer team saw visiting Shippensburg (PA) score the game-winning goal in the literal last second of overtime in a 1-0 result in at Anderson Field.

A crossing pass from Tom Stagg bounced away from CU goalkeeper Matt Hamilton, and Derrick Roy booted the ball across the goal line just as the final buzzer sounded.

It was Concord's fifth one-goal loss this season, and the fourth by a 1-0 score.

The statistics suggest the Raiders had the measure of play – they outshot CU 18-8 and had a 5-3 edge in corner kicks – but the match was crisply and evenly contested and neither side was dominant.

Both teams had potential lead goals bounce off the goal apparatus – Ship's Andrew Collier put a header off the post in the 44th minute, and Concord's Jacob Wise was denied the game-winner when his hard shot deflected off the crossbar with just 1:28 remaining in regulation.

Monday's match was originally scheduled for September 7, but had to be postponed due to heavy rain that turned Anderson Field into a “waterlogged pitch.”

Up next for Concord (1-11, 1-6) is another non-conference match.  The Mountain Lions will meet WVU Tech on Wednesday, October 12, at Coonskin Park in Charleston, WV.

The match is part of a doubleheader with the CU's women's team, and kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
