SCHRAM DENIED IN BID TO WIN "THE TINO"

CONCORD ALL-AMERICAN FINISHES 5th IN VOTING FOR NEW PLAYER OF THE YEAR AWARD

As the saying goes, it's an honor to be nominated.

Concord's Greyson Schram finished fifth in the voting for the inaugural Tino Martinez Award as the NCAA Division II national player of the year.

Schram was one of six finalists for the first-ever award. Organizers of “The Tino” announced the results on May 31st.

Bryan Fogle of Erskine College (Due West, SC) won “The Tino” for a senior season in which he hit .430 with 28 home runs and 103 runs batted in over 58 games. Fogle led the nation in homers, RBIs and total bases (203) and captured several national awards. (http://www.erskinecollegesports.com/news/2010/5/31/BSB_0531102542.aspx)

Meanwhile, Schram posted one of the best seasons in Concord and West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference history in 2010. The senior from Stanley, NC steamrolled to the WVIAC Triple Crown by hitting .508 with 20 home runs and 81 runs batted in over only 38 games.

On top of that, he battered opposing pitchers for a nearly unbelievable 1.103 slugging percentage and an imposing .599 on-base percentage.

WVIAC coaches voted Schram the league's Player of the Year and Hitter of the Year.

Schram also earned First-Team NCAA Division II All-America honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association, Daktronics and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Daktronics and the NCBWA also named him as Atlantic Region Player of the Year.

Greyson Schram
Schram led the nation in home runs per game (.53), RBIs per game (2.13), slugging and OBP. He was runner-up in batting average, and his .508 mark was the second-best in WVIAC history.

He drew 28 walks against only 11 strikeouts, and stole 11 bases in 13 attempts.

He averaged an RBI every 1.57 at bats and a home run every 6.3 at bats and was a mainstay of a Concord offense that was fourth in the nation in scoring at 10.8 runs per game.

Schram's candidacy may have been harmed by Concord's comparatively small number of games this season (38).  If Schram played 58 games and maintained his same level of productivity, here's how his statistics would compare to Fogle:
