For a season in which they developed into one of the most dangerous inside-outside combinations in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Concord sophomores Jolysa Brown and Camisha Alexander earned spots on the 2009-2010 Women's Basketball All-WVIAC 2nd Team.
Brown (Hinton, WV/Summers County HS) was the conference leader in double-doubles (11) and offensive rebounding (3.54/game). She finished the season ninth in scoring (14.8 ppg), third in blocked shots (1.96/game) and total rebounding (8.9/game) and 12th in free throw percentage (.746).
Brown’s highlight game came at Davis & Elkins on November 19th. She shot 12-13 from the floor and 8-8 from the free-throw line for a career-high 32 points, while pulling down nine rebounds and handing out three assists.
At Glenville State on January 21st, Brown matched her career high with 32 points, part of a double-double that included ten rebounds. She also blocked three shots.
Among Brown’s other double-doubles were an 18-point, 18-rebound performance in CU’s win over Bluefield College November 16th; 18 points and 12 rebounds in the Lady Lions’ comeback win over West Virginia State on February 20th; 17 points and 11 rebounds in Concord’s key early-season win over Fairmont State December 8th and 19 points and 11 rebounds against Glenville State on February 15th.
Brown tallied 29 points and eight rebounds in CU’s 94-93 win at Shepherd February 24th.
Alexander (Beckley, WV/Woodrow Wilson HS) was seventh the WVIAC in scoring (15.1 ppg), third in free throw percentage (.824), eighth in three-point percentage (.393) and 12th in three-pointers made (57).
She tied for the conference’s season-high single-game scoring mark, with a 41-point performance against Glenville State at the Carter Center on February 15th. Five days later, Alexander went for 36 points to spark the Lady Lions’ come-from-behind win over West Virginia State. She topped the 20-point mark in seven other games.
Injuries took a toll on Concord’s lineup, particularly on offense. Starters Sierra Brown and Sidney Lindsey and key reserve Meghan Cole missed significant portions of the schedule, leaving Alexander and Jolysa Brown as the team’s primary options.
They responded well.
Over Concord’s last 11 games, Alexander averaged 22.3 points while shooting .460 (74-161) from the field and .417 (30-72) from three-point range.
Brown shot an impressive .578 (63-109) while averaging 16.2 points and 8.5 rebounds.
